On December 12, 2024, Congresswoman Carol Miller and Congressman Alex Mooney, both representing West Virginia, alongside Senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito, announced the approval of a Major Disaster Declaration for West Virginia by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This declaration follows the extensive damage caused by Post-Tropical Storm Helene in southern West Virginia from September 25 to September 28, 2024. The state’s delegation had previously appealed to President Biden and FEMA for this declaration.
Congresswoman Miller expressed her satisfaction with FEMA’s response: “I am glad that FEMA responded to the West Virginia delegation’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration for West Virginia after Hurricane Helene. Many communities in southern West Virginia were left with nothing but destruction and devastation after the storm.”
Congressman Mooney highlighted the importance of federal resources: “I am proud to have worked with my fellow members of the West Virginia Delegation to secure a Major Disaster Declaration from FEMA for the West Virginia counties impacted by Hurricane Helene.”
Senator Capito noted her advocacy efforts: “Just last week, I joined Vice President-elect Vance to see some of the devastation that Hurricane Helene brought… I am glad that FEMA has approved West Virginia’s request for a major disaster declaration for Mercer County after I advocated for Administrator Criswell to take this step last month.”
Senator Manchin emphasized collaboration within the delegation: “I am proud that the members of the West Virginia Delegation were able to work together and push for this declaration… I will continue to advocate for communities across the Mountain State.”
The federal declaration provides funding under FEMA’s Individual Assistance program. This allows affected individuals in Mercer County to seek reimbursement for expenses not covered by insurance or other assistance forms. Eligible expenses include rental assistance, home repair or replacement, and lodging.
