Cost of college went up for resident students at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College

In-state tuition and fees rose 4.5 percent for 2018-19 at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

West Virginia residents paid $3,892 to attend the two-year public institution this year – $168 more than the $3,724 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 53.7 percent more than residents this year, or $5,981. Their price tag was unchanged from $5,981 in 2017-18.

About 96 percent of the school's undergraduate population are West Virginia residents. And about 4 percent are residents of other states.

Data shows 95 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 374 students received grants or scholarships totaling $2.2 million and 91 students took out student loans totaling more than $422,981.

Including all undergraduates (1,458), 1,264 students used grants or scholarships totaling $7.1 million, and 396 students took out $2 million in federal student loans.
