Freshman Mia Cheatwood broke a program record and led the West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving teams on day two of the WVU Invitational at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park on Friday night.
Cheatwood's record-breaking performance came in the 100-yard breaststroke, as she bested the previous school record of 1:01.18 – set by Morgan Callaway in 2019 – with a time of 1:00.56.
Friday's finals session began with the first of many back-to-back wins from West Virginia. The women's squad of senior Jacqueline McCutchan, Cheatwood, senior Harna Minezawa and freshman Ada Szwabinska took the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:40.55, before juniors Justin Heimes and Joe Schaefer, senior David Snider and sophomore Conner McBeth won the men's event (1:27.43).
The first individual victory of the night came from freshman Gabriela Martin in the women's 200 free. The Las Gabias, Granada, Spain, native touched the wall in 1:47.83, followed by junior Abby Reardon in third (1:48.64). During the men's event, WVU saw its second individual win from junior Roanoke Shirk (1:37.13).
The Mountaineers' final three wins came from Cheatwood's top performance in the 100 breast, and McCutchan (54.10) and Heimes (48.14) in the 100 backstroke events.
Over in the diving well, senior diver Owen Johns led the 1-2 WVU finish during the men's 3-meter springboard finals. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native secured a 347.10 to take first, followed by sophomore Glenn Eloriaga in second (326.20).
Two represented the Mountaineers in the women's 1-meter finals, including sophomore Sarah Krusinski finishing seventh (245.45) and senior Marian Tiemeier in eighth (245.25), respectfully.
Sophomore Zhenya Ingram (3rd – 48.26) and Snider (4th – 48.37) in the men's 100 butterfly, sophomore Morgan Burton in the women's 400 IM (4:18.73) and freshman Adam McDonald in the men's 100 breast (54.59) rounded out West Virginia's day two top individual swims.
The night ended with the Mountaineers sweeping the 800 free relays. The women's relay of Reardon, Martin, sophomore Miranda Kirtley, and freshman Olivia Busch touched the wall first in 7:28. Freshman Jamin Harlan, juniors Brendan Williams, Logan McFadden and Shirk brought home first in men's even (6:36.01).
Competition at the Aquatic Center comes to an end on Saturday, with prelim action beginning at 10 a.m. and the finals session commencing at 6 p.m.
