WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-WV) and Congressman Alex Mooney (R-WV) have introduced legislation to rename the Clarksburg Federal Courthouse as the "Irene M. Keeley United States Courthouse". The bill is a tribute to Judge Irene Keeley, who was appointed by President George H.W. Bush as the first woman judge for the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of West Virginia.

Judge Keeley has been serving in this position for over 30 years, making her a trailblazer for West Virginia. Congresswoman Miller expressed her admiration for Judge Keeley, stating, "I can think of no better way to honor her than by dedicating the Clarksburg Federal Courthouse in her name. I thank Judge Keeley for her decades of service to our state and know that her legacy will inspire the generations to come."

Congressman Mooney also praised Judge Keeley for her dedication to justice, saying, "As a mother, educator, and first woman judge for the Northern District of West Virginia, Judge Keeley exemplifies hard work, perseverance, fairness, and dedication to justice." He further added, "Judge Keeley's service will continue to inspire West Virginians."

The proposed legislation has garnered support from both sides of the aisle, with Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) introducing companion legislation in the Senate. This bipartisan effort highlights the widespread recognition of Judge Keeley's contributions to the legal community.

Judge Irene M. Keeley graduated from the West Virginia College of Law in 1980 and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 11, 1992. She went on to serve as the district's court Chief Judge from March 2001 to March 2008, further cementing her reputation as a respected and influential figure in the legal field.

The renaming of the Clarksburg Federal Courthouse in honor of Judge Irene Keeley is a fitting tribute to her groundbreaking achievements and steadfast commitment to justice. This gesture not only recognizes her individual accomplishments but also serves as an inspiration for future leaders in West Virginia and beyond.

The bill text can be found on the official website.
