Washington D.C. – Yesterday, Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-WV) emphasized the importance of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for patients in rural America during a Ways and Means Committee Hearing.

Representing rural West Virginia, Congresswoman Miller underscored the critical role of EMS in addressing barriers to healthcare access in remote areas. She stated, "It's important that we get to our providers and this is what makes medical emergency services crucial to patients in my home."

During the hearing, Congresswoman Miller engaged Dr. Edward Racht, Chief Medical Officer of Global Medical Response, discussing the challenges faced by medical transportation teams in remote regions. Dr. Racht highlighted the need for specialized care for critically ill and injured patients, often requiring longer journeys to reach appropriate facilities.

The discussion also focused on the potential benefits of the treat-in-place model in improving EMS services in rural areas. Matt Zavadsky, Chief Transformation Officer at Medstar Mobile Healthcare, explained how this model allows for efficient triage and treatment of patients at the scene or in lower-acuity facilities outside of hospitals.

Mr. Zavadsky further elaborated on the impact of the treat-in-place model, stating, "Often times that patient can be very effectively treated in place with perhaps a telemedicine connection." He also mentioned the positive effects of legislation in West Virginia that allows EMS providers to be reimbursed for treatment in place services.

Congresswoman Miller raised concerns about the influence of mountainous terrain and weather on medical response time, prompting Mr. Zavadsky to emphasize the importance of considering geographical nuances in healthcare legislation and reimbursement policies.

The hearing shed light on the critical need for innovative approaches to EMS services in rural areas, aiming to enhance patient care, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness in remote communities.
