Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-WV) has expressed her concerns over the United States Postal Service's decision to convert the Charleston Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC) into a Local Processing Center (LPC). In a statement released today, Miller stated, "While I am encouraged by the USPS’ commitment to improving the Charleston Processing Center’s infrastructure, I remain concerned with the decision to convert the facility to a Local Processing Center." She highlighted the potential impact on mail delivery, stating, "Our mail will now have to leave West Virginia to go to Pittsburgh, just to come back to West Virginia again. This could result in delays that have life-threatening consequences for those who receive medication in the mail."

Miller also raised concerns about the implications for postal worker jobs in West Virginia, emphasizing the importance of keeping postal services and jobs within the state. She vowed to continue advocating for her constituents, stating, "I was abundantly clear that postal services and jobs should remain in West Virginia, and I will continue to advocate for this on behalf of my constituents."

The Charleston, West Virginia P&DC is a crucial facility that employs over 800 West Virginians and plays a vital role in supporting the state's small businesses. More than 98% of West Virginia’s state businesses rely on the mail system for various purposes, including sending out products, newsletters, checks, and mortgage payments. Additionally, the postal service is essential for many older rural Americans who rely on it for life-saving medications, as well as veterans who depend on it to receive their federal benefits.

The decision to convert the Charleston P&DC is part of a larger initiative, the $40 billion Delivering for America investment plan. The USPS plans to invest up to $22.8 million in the facility as part of this plan. As a result of this decision, mail processing outgoing operations will be transferred from Charleston, WV to the Pittsburgh P&DC in Pittsburgh, PA, and the Pennwood Place P&DC in Warrendale, PA.
