Congresswoman Carol Miller, Congressman Alex Mooney, and Senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito have formally appealed to President Joe Biden and FEMA Region III Administrator MaryAnn Tierney for a major disaster declaration in West Virginia. The request follows severe weather during Hurricane Helene that affected southern West Virginia from September 25 to September 28, 2024.

The lawmakers emphasized their support for Governor Jim Justice’s request in their letter, highlighting the significant damage caused by heavy rains, high winds, and flooding. They acknowledged the efforts of state and local first responders along with volunteers but stressed the ongoing need for federal aid.

The delegation’s letter included a specific appeal for Individual Assistance for Mercer and Raleigh Counties as well as assistance through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program statewide. They urged President Biden to review Governor Justice’s submission made on October 25, 2024, under Section 401 of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act.

“We applaud the tireless dedication of our State and local first responders, as well as the invaluable contributions of our neighbors and volunteers,” stated the lawmakers. “Nevertheless, the demand for aid remains substantial.”

The West Virginia representatives requested careful consideration of their appeal to address recovery needs in affected communities.
