Congresswoman Carol Miller of West Virginia has written an op-ed in Newsweek, advocating for the use of tariffs as a strategy to combat the influx of fentanyl into the United States. In her piece, she credits President Donald Trump with taking decisive action to fulfill his campaign promises by implementing tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China.

"President Donald Trump has dominated the headlines since winning the presidential election in November," Miller writes. She criticizes previous administration policies and praises Trump's efforts to secure borders and address drug-related issues. "The far Left and its media allies are clutching their pearls as he delivers on exactly the promises he campaigned on: securing the southern border, deporting illegal immigrants, and eliminating fentanyl from the United States."

Miller argues that these countries have been complicit in allowing fentanyl to cross into U.S. borders. She highlights that "fentanyl has flooded our communities from across our borders and become a leading cause of death for young people in the United States." The congresswoman believes that these challenges could have been mitigated with stricter border security under previous leadership.

She emphasizes that Trump's decision to impose tariffs is a strategic move aimed at addressing this crisis. "By deciding to implement tariffs on Mexican, Canadian, and Chinese imports, President Trump is sending a message to the world: The United States will not be taken advantage of, and actions have consequences," Miller asserts.

As a member of the Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee, Miller supports these tariffs as a means to tackle drug trafficking while also benefiting U.S. trade interests. She claims that these measures will help end illegal immigration and put America first.

Miller points out alarming statistics related to unauthorized immigration encounters under previous administrations and underscores the human toll resulting from fentanyl's presence in American communities. According to her article, "U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) had more than 10 million encounters with unauthorized immigrants under the Biden administration."

In addition to national concerns, Miller shares personal insights into how fentanyl has impacted her home state of West Virginia. She notes that West Virginia has suffered significantly from opioid-related deaths compared to other states.

Miller concludes by expressing confidence in Trump's leadership abilities: "President Trump is a businessman and a brilliant negotiator, and he is focused on keeping Americans safe." She affirms her belief that these tariffs are necessary steps toward ensuring national security.
